I have had issues on a quite weak system, it has 2G RAM.
Since FreeBSD-11.1 zfs arc is compressed by default which takes
some resources. With that feature disabled by
vfs.zfs.compressed_arc_enabled="0"
in /boot/loader.conf the system is as stable as it has been before.
I am not sure if there is a relation to your specific situation.

Kind regards,
Christoph
