Named 9.3.1 caching problem AMD64

I've got a very unusual problem running a bind caching name server on
AMD64. I've tried FreeBSD-5.4-p1 and 5.4-STABLE and nothing has
helped. Named goes into a "crash" state once hit hits approx 120M of
memory in use, at which point it chews 100% cpu and doesn't respond
to any futher queries. If anyone has any idea on how I can fix this
it would be much appreciated as it's a production system.

The folliowing are the relevant config details ...
