Hanging on ftp ftp.freebsd.org on way to ports collection

Perhaps you are better off using a local mirror:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/mirrors-ftp.html

Perhaps you'll get some usefull diagnostics when you try "ftp ftp.freebsd.org"
(user anonymous).
