By any chance, was defaultrouter set in /etc/rc.conf (possiably as a
side effect of initial configuration?) If so, that might be the cause
since dhclient was modified to only touch the default route if the
route is on the same interface as dhclient.
Any statement of the form "X is the one, true Y" is FALSE.
