Bug ID: 299404
Summary: clock rate scaling not fully supported on modern (gen
13+) intel amd64 chips
Product: Base System
Version: 15.1-RELEASE
Hardware: amd64
OS: Any
Status: New
Severity: Affects Many People
Priority: ---
Component: kern
Assignee: bugs@FreeBSD.org
Reporter: david@dcrosstech.com
Running FreeBSD on modern intel (generation 13+) CPUs does not allow the full
clock rate to be achieved. Worse when running CPU intensive tasks on multiple
cores it will actually SLOW DOWN all of the cores. Running on a single core
will increase the clock, but not to the full amount. It feels like thermal
throttling, but temperature as reported under dev.cpu in both absolute
temperature and throttle_log shows no events. Manually increasing the fan
speed will additionally cool the CPUs further, but still no increase in
temperature.
I have seen this on at least a Lenovo P16s and an AMD ASUS NUC14.
NUC14: Intel(R) Core(TM) 3 N355 (1881.60-MHz K8-class CPU
Lenovo p16s: 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1360P (2611.20-MHz K8-class CPU)
I have tried adjusting the EST priority with marginal results, it seems to
scale up faster but doesn't seem to dramatically affect the overall
performance.
