Hi Vince,
    I use irda support quite frequently. Here's a section from my ppp.conf
should help you out a fair bit.

ppp.conf
# create a connection: ircomm -d /dev/cuaa1 -v 2 -y /dev/ptypv
TelstraMobileInternet:
 set phone +61418707638
 set device /dev/ttypv
 set authname xxx
 set authkey xxx
 set dial "ABORT BUSY ABORT NO\\sCARRIER TIMEOUT 5 \"\" AT \
           OK-AT-OK ATE1Q0 OK \\dATDT\\T TIMEOUT 40 CONNECT"
