external drive not syncing. (fwd)

Subject: external drive not syncing.

I have an external drive that refuses to sync after 15 minutes of intense
drive activity.  any attempt to sync, ex, typing "sync" at the command
prompt, causes a hard crash, not even a kernel panic.  Any thoughts?
