It could be worth trying to use a kms-firmware commit that correspond to the
4.16 kernel (from https://github.com/FreeBSDDesktop/kms-firmware/).
I had concern a while ago that syncing the firmware with upstream should be
done more carefully for amd/radeon since they are not versioned like the intel
one.
Maybe the driver doesn't know how to handle the latest firmware (that wouldn't
be surprising).
