6970 fan on "liftoff" mode constantly.

So I have 10.0-RC1 installed on my i7 workstation which has a 6970 as it's
video card. I have built everything with "WITH_NEW_XORG" and I'm fairly
happy with it ...
As far as I can tell, things are working. GLClock works nicely. I don't
know where to find glgears, but I suspect that it's not going to be the
best measure of the performance of a a card like this.
The only annoying "feature" of the whole new system is that the "squirrel
cage" fan on the video card is set on "liftoff" mode. Now ... sometimes
... when playing a particularly difficult game, the fan gets to 100%, but
it's often partially mitigated by the sound of gunfire. In this case,
there is no gunfire. The 100% fan occurs from when X starts to when I
shutdown the machine.
Somewhere around BETA4, I could start firefox ... and something that I did
with firefox would "stall" the event queue of the driver --- and this stall
causes a reset --- and the reset causes the fan to return to normal
levels. But this no longer happens in -RC1. I suppose it's good that the
driver queue doesn't stall, but it's annoying that the fan is terribly
noisy.
Is there any way we can get the fan set sensibly?
