While I'm not familiar with that specific error, one thing comes to 
mind...  Have you adjusted the kern.securelevel sysctl at all?

Also, something else I feel the need to point out is that X server 1.4.0 
was released 3.5 years ago.  That's quite old in world of Xorg.
