The move to 10.4 was a buildworld buildkernel installkernel installworld and
mergemaster so all modules and userland were rebuilt. Indeed, for a long time
I've been running a 10.3 kernel with 10.4 userland as a workaround while we
found this (don't run hald) workaround.

I'll try a freshly rebuilt hald and report back shortly.
