This is make, not sh.
That would be the line
.if ${BUILDKERNELS:[#]} > 1 && ${NO_INSTALLEXTRAKERNELS} != "yes"
in current stable/10, and it's horking on the [...] modifier. That's
listed in the make manpage on a stable/10 system from last October, so
it's not terribly new. Maybe an ancient make? Or your 'make' isn't
the make it's expecting?
