Now running with

    hw.msk.msi_disable=1
    hw.msk.jumbo_disable=1

still getting the storms, the above settings just seem to make
them less severe/often.

Any network activity will do, sometimes even just fetching new
mail from pop.gmail.com via POP3 over SSL.
