It seems it is yet another mysterious and notorious "memory mapped IO 
hangs after PAT change" case of Apple hardware.  If that's the case, 
FreeBSD 7.3 or older should work, I think.  Then, you can upgrade it 
from source *after* adding your Mac model in sys/amd64/amd64/pmap.c 
such as this:
