8.0 installworld fails in /usr/src/lib/csu/i386-elf cc: not found

Shot in the dark: are you using the -j argument during "make
installworld" (not buildworld)?  If so, don't do that.

Otherwise, try moving make.conf aside and see if things improve.  One
thing at a time...  :-)
