GRUB does not boot FreeBSD after installworld ...

I had similar problems, the following entry in my /etc/make.conf fixed
this for me:

# /boot/loader crashs with pentium-m
.if ${.CURDIR:M*/src/sys/boot/i386/loader*}
.undef CPUTYPE
CPUTYPE?=               pentium3
CFLAGS=                 -O2 -pipe
.endif

Just replace pentium3 with something that works on your system.
