Can't boot with a new install

Thank you Joseph for the reply and I would like to assure you that Yes,
I am able to boot from a CD and access the hard-disk in fixit mode by
mounting it under /mnt like this:

# mount /dev/ad0s1 /mnt

I can see all the folders in there were created yesterday, which is
correct! Any other hints to look for?
