What version of FreeBSD are you running?
meddussa# uname -a
FreeBSD medussa.satx.rr.com 6.1-RELEASE FreeBSD 6.1-RELEASE #0: Sun May
7 04:42:56 UTC 2006 root at opus.cse.buffalo.edu:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/SMP
i386
What is the output of:
ls /dev/ad1*
meddussa# ls /dev/ad1
/dev/ad1 /dev/ads14
Also, what do you get with:
file - < /dev/ad1
meddussa# file - < /dev/ad1
/dev/stdin: x86 boot sector
