SATA HDD performance on my machine is less than stellar as well.  The
IRQ the SATA controller sits on is also given to the TI FireWire
controller on my SB Audigy, and I haven't gotten around to putting
that in a different slot and seeing if that changes anything.

It would have been nice for PCs to have gone to a full 5 bits for IRQ
instead of  just hacking things up by adding 2^3 to the existing 2^4
as was done.  Shared bus architectures, I spit on them all.
