4.8-RELEASE not identifying scsi drives

I had what might be a similarish problem in 2001 (but only relating to
internal disks), described here:

I never solved it, but found if I use the NCR driver rather than the SYM
one, things were fine (apart from the message shown below).  I've never
tried the SYM driver since to see if the problem still exists.

I still have the hardware (but it is in production) -- if I get an
opportunity, I will try a kernel with the SYM driver and see if it is any
better these days (not that that will help you two much!):
