Is this an observation ? atleast your 'X' seems to be broken: Since long ago
'X' is to be reported to startup with a gray-and-black-dotted (or
black-and-gray-dotted) background.

You can also edit your .xinitrc to list "xsetroot -solid blue" to let have
startx the same behaviour as 'X'
