2 PNY usb drives don't work at all with FreeBSD

Here's one of them:

ugen0.5: <vendor 0x2a97 STORAGE DEVICE> at usbus0
umass0 on uhub0
umass0: <vendor 0x2a97 STORAGE DEVICE, class 0/0, rev 2.00/2.00, addr 4>
on usbus0
umass0:  SCSI over Bulk-Only; quirks = 0xc100
umass0:8:0: Attached to scbus8

and then after several minutes...

da0 at umass-sim0 bus 0 scbus8 target 0 lun 0
da0: <Specific STORAGE DEVICE 0009> Removable Direct Access SPC-2 SCSI
device
da0: Serial Number 05590930
da0: 40.000MB/s transfers
da0: 29522MB (60461056 512 byte sectors)
da0: quirks=0x2<NO_6_BYTE>
but lf /dev/da* says there is no such file.

I think these two drives are USB 2.0.  I have several PNY USB3.0 drives
that appear to work as exFat or NTFS.

Can anyone shed light on this issue?

I recently discovered how to mount usb drives with ntfs-3g or mount.exfat
