In the days before two-factor authentication your mail client needed an
user ID, usually the email address of your account and a password to
connect with IMAP, POP, SMPT servers.

If two mail clients accessed the same account, they both used the same
password.

Nowadays your mail client still needs an user ID, usually the email
address of your account and a password to connect with IMAP, POP, SMPT
servers, IOW nothing changed, even the same configureation GUI of e.g.
Evolution or Claws is used.

New is, that the password now is generated by Yahoo and you need a
password for each mail client, they do not use the same password to
access the same account.

The only issue is, that you need to know about it and that you need to
search for the place where Yahoo's Webinterface does provide this
feature. Actually they informed the users about it by email, they just
spread a little bit FUD, because they want us to use their smartphone
apps or Webinterfaces only. However, the fault for this annoyance isn't
caused by companies such as Yahoo, it's for example EU law that does
force companies to change authentication methods two times a year. Not
related to email accounts yet, but at least related to online banking,
so companies try to be prepared for the future.
