Thank you for the help.  It is gratefully appreciated.

I had to run 'pkg upgrade' to get samba to change versions to 4.3.9 as
'pkg update' left me with samba43-4.3.8.  But other that that
everything went pretty much as you suggested and the samba43-4.3.9
provisioning completed without error.
