If I don't add the lines above, I am not able to run lspci as a normal user. I think that is a signifiant enough consideration. The first Google search results for 'k3b no optical device' returned a link which suggested running lspci as the first step to resolving the problem.
As for /dev/cd0, I wonder how I managed to burn a CD in k3b when I did not have not write access as mentioned in devfs.conf. Might have delegated powers via /dev/pci ?
