Install from packages, or install from the ports tree. Don't mix the
two. The ports tree is updated more frequently than the package
repository, so mis-matched dependencies are a possibility when slightly
older packages from the repository are installed alongside more recent
ones from the ports tree.
That may not be the source of your problem, but you can at least
eliminate a variable or two by staying consistent with where you get
your software.
