FreeBSD 10.1p10 defaultrouter not working

It doesn't. Whether it's by design or a flaw, I've noticed this for
about 5 years.
route add default <IP of default>
and everything should be fine. :-)
Otherwise, a full reboot will read the /etc/rc.conf file and everything
should behave as expected.
