This is somehow interesting. I'm (still) using a FreeBSD 8
system at home and have installed the nVidia driver from
ports. The module has been put as /boot/modules/nvidia.ko,
and my /boot/loader.conf contains `nvidia_load="YES"' - and
this constellation seems to work!

The question could be: Has this been changed later on, on
FreeBSD 9 or 10?

The /boot/kernel directory is usually managed by the "make
installkernel" procedure (or freebsd-update, if you use that
instead). So an update might bring you some surprise...

I'd suggest to file a bug report for the "kernel" category.
If that's wrong, a person with more knowledge will re-address
it properly. Or maybe the port maintainer should also be
notified?
