a lot of "geek" users not necessarily like to use proprietary drivers
and the 3D acceleration provided by free drivers often isn't fast enough
to use GNOME3, that now has got no mode anymore to use it without 3D
acceleration. Current versions of X and older proprietary ATI driver
often can't be used together, IOW sometimes a proprietary driver can't
be used, even if the user should be willing to use proprietary drivers.

GNOME comes with tons of insane hard dependencies, perhaps unimportant
when building GNOME from ports, but likely it will need some patches.

With each new "stable" GKT3 release from upstream there are new
bugs/features that are just a PITA and they effect even users who stay
away from crappy GNOME.

LXDE already switches to Qt.
