clearing /var/tmp in periodic.conf?

From "/etc/defaults/rc.conf"

clear_tmp_enable="NO"   # Clear /tmp at startup.
clear_tmp_X="YES"       # Clear and recreate X11-related directories in /tmp

populate_var="AUTO"     # Set to YES to always (re)populate /var, NO to never
cleanvar_enable="YES"   # Clean the /var directory


I use the first two options without any apparent problems. I have never
used the last two. Maybe someone who is more familiar with them could
explain them in more detail.
