Installing squid, where should the directories be?

I've found it. Well, now when all is installed and configured I think 
I'll stick with /usr/local/squid.

In the future I'll follow the instructions from UPDATING.

Would you recommend that I still use a separate partition for /var/squid 
even if it's on a single drive?
