the speed parameter got stuck after I tried the lowest supported speed to exclude the speed as the cause.

These optical media drive me crazy. I once have had a CD with a very fine crack. Once it worked, once it did not. Over time, the crack became visible. As it was an installation CD it caused a lot of problems before realising that the CD is the source.

My first BSD was running on a PDP-11 in 79. Some time has passed since then.
