why do I require "WPA" in rc.conf even for open networks.

I had
ifconfig_wlan0="ssid MySSID DHCP"
and attempted to connect to an OPEN network without being able to do so.
When I added ifconfig_wlan0="ssid MySSID WPA DHCP" I was able to
connect to the same network.
