why do I require "WPA" in rc.conf even for open networks.

I use WPA and have no urge to run tests for someone else on this
right now, but are you sure something like

ifconfig_wlan0="ssid ForteanJungle wepmode mixed wepkey 8675309 DHCP"

doesn't work at all these days?
