Paul, 
 the above failed until I changed the ap from wpa2 to wpa.

I'm now running semi-happily using wpa. I wonder if maybe the ndis wrapper
won;t support wpa2? Or perhaps the rc.conf entry should read:

ifconfig_ndis0 "WPA2 DHCP"

Hmmm...
