Migrating Evolution folders

I recently upgraded from 5.3 to 5.4, and this resulted in an upgrade of
Evolution from 1.4 to 2.2.1.1.

The folders are now held in ~/.evolution instead of ~/evolution, but
there seem to be some format incompatibilities.  I have not succeeded in
migrating my mail yet.  I googled for the problem, and there are one or
two hints that other people have had problems, but I can't find a
solution.  If it can't be done automatically, I think I will switch to
another mail client, maybe Thunderbird.

Any pointers, please?
