hello, richard. well, i don't know what the DISPLAY variable is or where
to set it, nor am i conscious of ever having so done (but i'm busy
googling it to learn more... :) in the meantime, you managed,
nevertheless, to hit upon the problem.
i was trying to install from a virtual term within X (where $DISPLAY comes
in?) and recall that i recently changed my su habits -- now 'su -l' instead
of simple 'su'. the upshot is that when i tried to run firefox as root,
without $DISPLAY set, it didn't work the mojo it was supposed to. after i
realized that this might be the problem, i tried a simple 'su' and firefox
has since been happily interpreting html for me.
thanks for everyone's help on this!
