Brett, if you can, change that file back to its original contents.  IIRC, you 
simply need to edit this line in /etc/ttys:

ttyv8   "/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon"  xterm   off secure

Change it to read:

ttyv8   "/usr/local/bin/kdm" xterm on secure

This should start everything for you!  I'm going to test it now to be sure, 
but I think that's right.
