Err -- are you sure about that?  I have this in /etc/syslog.conf:

    # uncomment this to log all writes to /dev/console to /var/log/console.log
    console.info                                    /var/log/console.log

And consequently I have this in my /var/log/console.log:

I also get a nice transcript of running mergemaster in single user
