vim keyboard mapping problems (ssh)

Put this in your .vimrc file:

set nocompatible

I may have misremembered the command, but it should be in in
/usr/share/examples/vimrc, or somewhere very like it.  Do a find /usr
-name *vimrc* and your should be able to find the settings you need.
