Mac Mini freezes

I have installed the October snapshot on my Mac Mini.

As with every other release / snapshot I am having problems with system 
freezes without any debug info, particularly when building ports.

I posted a similar problem a year ago to the day:

My hope that a year on this bug might have been fixed (through some 
happy coincidence) was ill-founded.

I would be happy to test things for anyone that thinks they can help ...
