x11/nvidia-{driver, settings, xconfig}: why not the latest available version (290.10)?

Ah, thank you for that.  Looks like some very sound reasoning.  Makes
sense to me now.  I had a sort of vague notion it might be something
along these lines, but danfe stated it very clearly.
