I've been seeing this exactly, with all my current kernels.  If I boot a kernel from January 10 it works fine.  Today I started trying to find a reason and as of now, have found nothing.  All the machines are AMD athlon's.  I doubt that will help much but . . . 

Steven, are you using current?  Athlon?
