Found the problem and the fix.  Forgot that I had enabled "device cryptodev" in
my kernel conf.  After disabling this, encfs is working again.

I still have "device crypto" enabled in kernel.  From the cryptodev man page, I
can't tell the difference between device crypto and device cryptodev.  The man
page for aesni says you need both crypto and cryptodev.  I still see the aesni0
device though, so it's not clear what the requirements are.  All I know is that
cryptodev breaks encfs.

Closing this issue as it's clearly not an encfs or port problem.
