FWIW, the machine is now updated to latest 7.1-stable:
root at kg-v2# uname -a
FreeBSD kg-v2.kg4.no 7.1-STABLE FreeBSD 7.1-STABLE #3: Fri Jan  9 22:14:31 CET 2009     root at kg-v2.kg4.no:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC  amd64

And /dev/sndstat now reports:
root at kg-v2# cat /dev/sndstat
FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm: 64bit 2007061600/amd64)
Installed devices:
pcm0: <HDA VIA VT1708B_1 PCM #0 Analog> at cad 0 nid 1 on hdac0 kld snd_hda [MPSAFE] (1p:1v/1r:1v channels duplex default)
pcm1: <HDA VIA VT1708B_1 PCM #1 Digital> at cad 0 nid 1 on hdac0 kld snd_hda [MPSAFE] (1p:1v/0r:0v channels)
pcm2: <HDA NVidia (Unknown) PCM #0 Digital> at cad 3 nid 1 on hdac0 kld snd_hda [MPSAFE] (1p:1v/0r:0v channels)

And sound now works.
