default GENERIC on i386 arch

I m using VM ware image of BSD 7.2-p4 for serving Web service.
for some reason I installed VM tools ( version of vmware workstation 6.5 )
Just for testing purpose I tried to upgrade using freebsd-update -upgrade 8.0-RC3
then i ran the install and restarted. I got kernel panic on loading the VM tools.
Probably not your problem, but I guess it does not hurt to ask for advise.
