Maybe something should be in the handbook about this? As far as I can
tell, everything there about this seems to suggest swap partitions and
files are functionally equivalent, but it's clear from your message and
my experience that they aren't.

(btw I forgot to mention the filesystem I had the swapfile problem with. It
was ufs2).
