If you are looking for additional beginner friendly ways to get started:

libxo: https://wiki.freebsd.org/LibXo (make programs able to emit
json/xml/etc instead of just text)

and libucl: https://wiki.freebsd.org/201506DevSummit/UCL (universal
config language, making nicer config files)
