What exactly is ungraceful -- or the slightest bit unclear -- about:

> configure: error: ORBit 0.5.12 or later required

FWIW, if you updated your ports tree on a regular basis, you'd have a
slightly more complete error message that provides a link to a program
that diagnoses this sort of thing automatically.
