Okay.., here's what I've now got:
Section "Module"
        Load  "dbe"
        Load  "dri"
        Load  "extmod"
        Load  "glx"
        Load  "speedo"
        Load  "freetype"
        Load  "type1"

I'll redo the logoff / login procedure, and see what happens.
